Does
cavity wall insulation work?
Yes. It basically works the same as a jumper or your
overcoat does to keep your body heat in. Insulating
the walls will reduce the rate at which a house
loses heat making your home a lot more
comfortable and cheaper to run.
Does it
give off any smells or fumes?
No. The product is installed dry. No liquid or
chemicals are involved in the installation
therefore no smells or fumes are given off.
I can’t
see it, how do I know the right amount of material
has gone into my property?
The installing machines are set to ensure that the
material is installed to the correct density. Before
any work is carried out, our surveyor will also
visit the property to take measurements. As part of
the quality control procedure the size of
the property is cross checked with the materials
used from stock to ensure that the property has been
fully insulated.
How
long does it take to install?
Around 2 to 2.5 hours for a semi detached or a
bungalow and about half a day for a standard
detached property.
Does
cavity wall insulation cause damp?
No. If the property has no damp problems before the
installation of cavity wall insulation, it will
certainly not have any afterwards. Our site survey
visit will check to ensure that the property is
suitable. In addition the product has been
independently tested by The British Board of Agreement
(BBA) and has been
successfully awarded a BBA certificate.
Does
cavity wall insulation prevent damp?
Dampness in buildings can be caused by a variety of
things. If the property is suffering from
condensation, which normally shows as black mould on
cold wall external walls, then yes insulating the
walls will help. This problem is caused by warm
moist air hitting a cold surface and condensing
which makes it the ideal condition for mould spores
to start growing in which will then be seen as a
black stain on the wall. The mould can be cleaned
off and decorated and will generally stay away
during the summer months but usually reappears once
the temperature drops, around October and November
time.
The insulation will make the wall surface
temperature warmer and a lot less
likely for moisture to condense. However, it is not
a guaranteed cure by itself, as the property also
needs to have adequate heating and sufficient
ventilation to allow moisture to escape.
A survey of the property will identify the cause of
any damp and whether insulation will help.
I have
noisy neighbours will insulating the wall between
the properties help?
No. The wall between the properties is
called the party wall. Sometimes this is cavity
sometimes its solid. The way sound travels is a
complicated issue. Sound can be transmitted through
the fabric of the building therefore insulating this
wall will give little, if any, sound improvement
Do you
offer any guarantees?
Yes. A 25 year CIGA guarantee is
offered on all full installations.
How
many holes do you need to drill?
This depends on the dimensions of the property.
Small holes are drilled between the mortar joints to a
specified pattern. The holes are only
22mm, about the size of a ten pence coin

How
do you stop the insulation going into my neighbours’
property?
A cavity barrier is inserted into the cavity which
ensures that only the property being insulated is
filled.

I
only want one wall doing can I have only this done?
If this is the only wall that can be done on the
property, then yes. If other areas also needs doing,
then no. We can only issue CIGA guarantees on
complete installations.
I
have a painted rendered house, can you guarantee an
exact match with my paintwork?
No guarantees can be made in obtaining an exact
match. We do however carry the most common range of
Sandtex external paints. Every endeavour is made to
obtain as close a match as possible.
I
have vents around my property what will happen to
these?
Our fully trained installers will ensure that all
essential vents are kept free which may mean
removing the vent and sleeving it and replacing it
with a new one. If the vent is a non essential vent
then this can be safely sealed up.
Some examples of essential vents are those supplying
air for a fuel burning appliance, larder vents, and
vents for suspended timber floors.
How
long will the insulation last?
For the lifetime of the property.
Every property is different and a survey will assess the suitability of your home for cavity wall insulation. There is no charge for a survey.
